CALL FOR PROPOSALS
MODELATORNIA
In reference to the tradition of theatrical exploration carried out in 1959–1964 in Opole by Jerzy Grotowski and the Theatre of 13 Rows, the Jan Kochanowski Theatre created a new platform for fresh and unconventional dialogue with the audience, escaping from museum-like approach to Grotowski heritage.
In order to ensure that artists have open access to this space, the JK Theatre launched the Competition within the Modelatornia programme. The intention of the Competition’s initiators was to start and to continue explorations, in contemporary cultural, social, political and artistic contexts, that would creatively echo the professional experimental theatre formula as proposed by Grotowski. Our goal is to create on Modelatornia an asylum for all theatre makers willing to try new forms and ways to communicate with the audience.
We’re looking for artists, that are ready to confront themselves, with many other disciplines of arts (visual, sound, classical music, performance, new drama, cinema, devised methods and many others) in order to find new perspective for theatre in general. We need young and open-minded makers, open for dialogue and critique, willing to broaden their (and ours) horizons, basing their work ethics on strong believe in constant renewal of creative methods. We need partners in crime against old habits, ingrained forms and slothful topics.

EDITION 7
This year’s edition of the Modelatornia competition is a direct continuation of last year’s activities. Among the three artistic residencies completed in 2023, the Competition Committee selected one to be produced as a full-fledged performance. We invite you to the premiere of the play, provisionally titled “IT-1” directed by Wera Makowskx, on October 26, 2024.
FAKE AND HATE
With the 6th edition of MODELATORNI, Kochanowski Theater returns to Jerzy Grotowski’s idea from the period of “Art as a vehicle”, in which the creator himself was supposed to be the real recipient of his own work. We invite creative people to submit projects for a week-long residency referring to the slogan “fake and hate”.
We are looking for works that correspond to the theme in a broad dimension, hoping that such a huge spectrum of possibilities, will remain open to the experience of a broad experiment.
RESULTS
On October 31 of this year, the Competition Committee of the 6th Modelatornia Theater Project Competition, consisting of: Norbert Rakowski (chairman), Piotr Ratajczak, Judyta Paradzińska, Cecylia Caban, Maciej Omylak selected three residency projects to be held at the Jan Kochanowski Theater in Opole.
The winning works are projects by Jan Hussakowski, Bartlomiej Kalinowski and Vera Makowskx. The effects of their artistic explorations will be seen in the form of a work-in-progress at the end of November.
Wera Makowskx will work on the project “Algorithm of the Sacred,” in which she will look at the interpenetration of the zone of the sacred with the zone of artificial intelligence.
Bartlomiej Kalinowski, with his project “(Go) Dig a Pit and Shout to It,” will address language, which in the post-truth era is becoming in new ways a tool of manipulation that sustains the system of power.
Jan Hussakowski, on the other hand, with his work “Man 2.0. Teletourism,” will invite us to talk about genetic engineering of the human species, looking at the CRISPR/Cas method.
We sincerely congratulate you and hope that the residency work of all creative people will abound in interesting coverings. At the same time, we would like to thank all those who have sent residence projects for the work they have put in and the time they have spent participating in the Competition.
"WYSOKIŃSKA'S PERFORMANCE MAKES THIS POINT SO CLEARLY, SUGGESTIVELY AND CONVINCINGLY THAT THE SEMICOLON HERE COULD BE REPLACED BY AN EXCLAMATION MARK. FOR WE SHOULD NOT TRY TO DROWN OUT THAT VOICE WITH ANYTHING".
